Teamaxxing Is Trending, but Is It Worth Trying?

August 6, 2026

A simple cup of tea has become the center of one of TikTok’s newest wellness conversations. Known as teamaxxing, the trend encourages drinking tea more often throughout the day as part of a balanced lifestyle. Unlike many online health trends that promise quick fixes, this one focuses on a habit backed by years of research on tea and its naturally occurring plant compounds.

Tea has long been valued for its antioxidants, hydration benefits, and calming ritual. The growing interest in teamaxxing has prompted many people to ask the same question: Can adding a few cups of tea to a daily routine make a meaningful difference?

Registered dietitians say the answer depends on the type of tea, the amount consumed, and how it fits into an overall healthy lifestyle.

What Is Teamaxxing?

Teamaxxing follows the same idea as the social media trend known as fibermaxxing. Instead of increasing fiber intake, the focus shifts to drinking tea regularly to support overall wellness.

According to Tara Fiano, RD, CSOWM, LDN, CDCES, clinical dietetics lead at Vida Health, teamaxxing is a wellness trend that encourages people to increase their tea intake—most commonly green tea or matcha—throughout the day while maintaining other healthy lifestyle habits. The goal is to take advantage of tea’s potential health benefits rather than relying on a single solution for better health.

Although the trend gained attention on TikTok, the health benefits associated with tea have been studied for decades. That makes teamaxxing different from many viral wellness ideas that often lack scientific support.

Why Tea Has Earned Attention

Tea contains naturally occurring antioxidants and polyphenols, compounds that help protect cells from damage caused by oxidative stress. These compounds are released into the water during brewing, making them easy for the body to absorb.

Megan Wroe, MS, RD, CNE, CLEC, wellness manager at Providence St. Jude Medical Center, explains that teas provide antioxidants and polyphenols that may support immune health because these beneficial compounds become highly absorbable once brewed.

Tea also offers another practical advantage. Replacing sugary beverages or high-caffeine drinks with tea can help improve daily hydration while reducing overall caffeine intake.

Sara Riehm, RD, LDN, CSOWM, certified specialist in obesity and weight management, notes that tea provides antioxidants that may support healthy skin and help reduce the risk of chronic diseases. She also points out that tea can satisfy caffeine needs in lower amounts than coffee, making it a suitable option for many people.

Best Teas to Include in Teamaxxing

Not every tea offers the same benefits. Different varieties contain unique plant compounds that may support specific aspects of health.

1. Green Tea

Green tea is one of the most studied teas. It comes from the Camellia sinensis plant, the same plant used to make black tea. The difference lies in the processing. Green tea leaves are processed soon after harvest. This prevents oxidation and helps preserve natural antioxidants.

According to Sara Riehm, green tea, including matcha, is rich in polyphenols, especially EGCG (epigallocatechin-3-gallate). This powerful antioxidant may help reduce inflammation, support brain and heart health, promote healthy cholesterol levels, and slightly boost metabolism, making it a popular choice for weight management.

2. Black Tea

Black tea also comes from the Camellia sinensis plant. Unlike green tea, it goes through full oxidation. This process forms natural compounds called theaflavins.

Sara Riehm says black tea may support cardiovascular health. Research suggests regular consumption may help maintain healthy blood pressure. Studies also associate it with a lower risk of heart attacks and strokes. Black tea contains more caffeine than green tea, but many people enjoy it for its rich flavor and potential heart health benefits.

3. Oolong Tea

Oolong tea is another variety made from Camellia sinensis. It is partially oxidized, giving it characteristics that fall between green and black tea.

According to Sara Riehm, RD, LDN, CSOWM, oolong tea contains polyphenols with anti-inflammatory properties. Early research suggests these compounds may help lower the risk of certain cancers. More studies are needed to confirm these findings. Even so, oolong tea remains a healthy option for people looking to enjoy a wider variety of teas.

4. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile is an herbal tea made from flowers in the daisy family. Unlike traditional teas, it contains no caffeine.

Sara Riehm explains that chamomile is well known for supporting better sleep. It may help people fall asleep more easily and improve sleep quality. A warm cup before bedtime can also become part of a relaxing evening routine. Some research suggests chamomile may support digestion and help ease symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

5. Ginger Tea

Ginger tea is made from dried ginger root instead of tea leaves. It contains gingerol, a natural compound that supports digestive health.

According to Sara Riehm, gingerol may help reduce nausea, gas, and bloating. It may also support healthy digestion after meals. Since ginger tea is naturally caffeine-free, it can be enjoyed at any time of day without affecting sleep.

How to Practice Teamaxxing Safely

Drinking more tea does not always mean better results. Tara Fiano, RD, CSOWM, LDN, CDCES, recommends limiting tea intake to two to four cups per day. Staying within this range may help prevent excessive caffeine consumption while reducing the chance of interfering with iron absorption.

The time of day also matters. Fiano says research suggests tea may provide different benefits depending on when it is consumed. Some evidence suggests that drinking tea later in the day may help maintain blood glucose control after the evening meal.

At the same time, caffeinated teas such as green and black tea are best enjoyed earlier in the day because consuming them in the late afternoon or evening may interfere with sleep.

Important Safety Considerations

Most teas are considered safe when consumed in moderation, but a few precautions are worth noting. Green and black teas contain caffeine, with black tea generally providing more than green tea. People who are sensitive to caffeine or experience sleep problems may benefit from limiting intake later in the day.

Chamomile tea may not be suitable for everyone. Sara Riehm advises that people taking certain medications, including blood thinners or immunosuppressant drugs, should avoid chamomile unless advised otherwise by a healthcare professional.

Teamaxxing is built around a habit that is both practical and supported by scientific research. Green tea may benefit brain health and weight management, black tea may support heart health, oolong offers valuable polyphenols, chamomile encourages restful sleep, and ginger tea may ease digestive discomfort.

While tea is not a substitute for a balanced diet or healthy lifestyle, choosing the right variety and enjoying it in moderation can be an easy way to add beneficial plant compounds and hydration to everyday routines.
