How Limewashed Walls Can Give Your Minimalist Kitchen a Vintage Look

September 18, 2026

A kitchen does not need bold colors or heavy cabinetry to feel warm and distinctive. Limewash paint can add soft texture, depth, and an old-world character while keeping the room simple. A kitchen makeover by DIYer and apartment dweller Teresa Rudolph shows how this finish can work especially well with wood, open shelving, and vintage furniture.

The kitchen originally featured crisp white walls, checkered floors, and a basic white kitchen setup along the left side. After moving in, Teresa replaced the flooring with wood, creating a warmer foundation for the room.

Her design preference combines minimalist and modern elements with carefully chosen vintage pieces. She wanted to “keep everything flat — no upper cabinets … so you don’t accumulate more than you really need.” The goal was to keep the kitchen practical without filling the walls with storage.

That approach also left room for a mix of old and new details, giving the space a more personal appearance without making it feel crowded.

Limewash Changes the Walls

Apartment Therapy | Teresa used limewash paint over textured wallpaper to successfully achieve a soft, aged look.

The main visual update came from limewash paint. Teresa applied the finish directly over the existing white textured wallpaper. Although she noted that a blank wall would have been preferable, the paint still created the soft, aged appearance she wanted.

“It’s a limewash paint,” Teresa says. “I used Kalklitir — the color is called ‘Elle.’ I can highly recommend it.”

She also suggested adding a small amount of water to the paint mixture. This can make limewash easier to spread, particularly when working over a textured surface.

Limewash differs from standard flat wall paint because its application creates subtle variations in tone. Those shifts give the walls a handcrafted appearance while maintaining the restrained feel of a minimalist kitchen.

Vintage Furniture Adds Function

A restored antique workbench on the right side of the kitchen adds another layer of character. Teresa purchased it years ago for €300 through Kleinanzeigen, a German classifieds platform similar to eBay.

The piece has served several purposes over the years, including a desk and bookshelf. In the kitchen, it works as a practical surface and an herb shelf. Its aged finish also balances the cleaner lines of the surrounding cabinetry and flooring.

Small Details Make Space Work

Apartment Therapy | Limewash offers subtle tonal shifts that bring handcrafted texture to a minimalist kitchen.

Storage and display areas make smart use of vertical space. Open shelves hold glassware, while a shelf inside the tall back window provides room for houseplants. A tension rod allows additional plants to hang without taking up valuable counter space.

The lighting required a creative solution because the kitchen had no ceiling power source. Instead, the cable for the new ceiling lamp runs along the ceiling and wall to the nearest outlet.

The finished kitchen combines limewashed walls, wood flooring, vintage furniture, open shelving, and greenery without feeling overloaded. Teresa describes the result as “not a sterile kitchen, but a cozy space that still fulfills its purpose.”

The makeover shows how a few carefully selected changes can give a simple kitchen more warmth and personality while preserving its practical, minimalist layout.
