Texas Shoppers Share Smart Ways to Save Money on Groceries

September 11, 2026

Grocery bills can climb quickly, especially when prices rise across everyday staples. Texas shoppers are finding practical ways to spend less without giving up the foods their households need. From comparing store deals to checking clearance shelves, these habits can help stretch a grocery budget.

The latest Consumer Price Index data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that food prices increased 3% over the 12 months from July 2025 to July 2026. The data, published August 12, also showed that food purchased for home consumption rose 2.7%.

Restaurant and takeout prices increased 3.4% during the same period. As a result, shoppers are paying closer attention to grocery prices and looking for ways to control weekly spending.

The discussion has also reached the H-E-B subreddit, where shoppers shared changes they have made to their grocery routines.

Compare Before Buying

Reddit user @jncowalletchain suggested creating a curbside shopping cart but completing the purchase inside the store. This approach can make it easier to plan purchases while avoiding certain curbside markups and possible pickup fees for faster time slots.

The shopper also said the method helps with budgeting, maximizing coupons, meal preparation, and keeping track of purchases.

Another H-E-B subreddit user, @mixlips67, recommended the Flipp app to compare grocery stores, digital coupons, and available deals. Comparing prices across several stores can reveal meaningful differences, especially for larger shopping trips.

Sales and Clearance Can Help

Kroger shoppers and employees shared similar strategies on the Kroger subreddit. User @J_L_jug24 said the family shops primarily during sales weeks and supplements purchases at Aldi to keep expenses down.

The comment also pointed out that paying $5 for a cereal box that is not discounted can quickly add up. Planning purchases around promotions can help avoid paying full price for routine items.

Clearance sections can offer another way to reduce costs. User @Boz6 said about 95% of purchases at Kroger come from clearance items, sale prices, or coupons. For shoppers who do not want to rely on those options, the user suggested considering Walmart, Aldi, or Lidl when those stores are available nearby.

Simple changes can make grocery spending easier to manage. Comparing prices between stores, checking digital coupons, and choosing sale or clearance items can help shoppers avoid paying full price. Planning meals around discounted products can also keep weekly expenses in check.

With food prices continuing to rise, a few minutes of preparation before shopping can make a noticeable difference. A clear list and a focus on genuine deals can help households stay within their grocery budget.
