Why the Viral “Unshrinking” Clothes Hack Doesn’t Work

August 26, 2026

A favorite shirt can come out of the washer or dryer looking like it belongs to someone much smaller. Viral laundry videos often promise an easy fix, with one popular method suggesting that conditioner and lukewarm water can stretch shrunken clothing back into shape.

However, laundry experts say these tricks do not provide a dependable, lasting solution.

Why Clothes Shrink

Shrinkage is mainly linked to heat, moisture, and agitation. Natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and silk are especially vulnerable. During washing and drying, high temperatures and repeated tumbling can cause their fibers to tighten, making the fabric smaller than it was before.

Synthetic materials, including polyester and spandex, generally resist shrinkage better. Still, that does not mean they are completely protected from heat-related damage. Following the garment’s care label remains the safest approach.

A few factors can increase the chance of shrinkage: hot wash cycles, high dryer temperatures, heavy tumbling, incorrect care settings and repeated exposure to heat.

Does the Viral Hack Work?

One of the most widely shared “unshrinking” methods recommends soaking a shrunken garment in lukewarm water mixed with hair conditioner. The clothing is then gently stretched toward its original dimensions and left to air dry.

The process sounds simple, but testing has not shown reliable long-term results.

Carolyn Forté, former executive director of the Home Care and Cleaning Lab, said, “We have never found any of the recommended methods to be successful.”

The GHI Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab also tested a product designed specifically to reverse shrinkage. Although the product appeared to work during the first attempt, the garment shrank again after it was washed.

That result points to the main problem with these viral methods: even when a fabric appears to regain some of its former size, the change may not hold through another wash.

How to Prevent Shrinkage

Preventing shrinkage is far more dependable than trying to reverse it. The first step is simple: check the care label before washing a garment.

Care instructions provide information about water temperature, washing cycles, drying methods, and other handling requirements. Those details matter most for natural-fiber clothing.

For better protection:

1. Use cold water. Cold washing is gentler on many fabrics and can also help reduce color bleeding and fiber damage.
2. Choose low heat. High dryer temperatures can cause vulnerable fibers to contract. Air drying is a safer choice for many shrink-prone garments.
3. Use a delicate cycle. Reduced agitation can help protect fabrics that are sensitive to rough washing.

Hand wash when required. Some wool, silk, and other delicate garments need gentler handling than a standard machine cycle provides.

What to Do With a Shrunken Garment

When a garment has already shrunk, forcing it back to its original dimensions may not be worthwhile. Stretching can sometimes alter the shape unevenly or place additional stress on the fibers.

Instead, consider whether the item can serve another purpose. Old T-shirts can become cleaning cloths, while worn jeans can be repurposed for small household projects. This approach gives the fabric another use without relying on an unreliable “unshrinking” treatment.

Viral laundry hacks can be tempting when a favorite piece no longer fits. However, expert testing has not established a dependable method for permanently restoring shrunken clothing. Heat and agitation can permanently change natural fibers, making prevention the better strategy.

Reading care labels, washing with appropriate temperatures, limiting heat, and choosing gentle cycles can significantly reduce the risk of shrinkage. When a garment does shrink, repurposing it may be a more practical solution than repeating an internet-famous fix that may only produce temporary results.
