This Simple Rice Washing Trick Is Surprising Home Cooks

May 15, 2026

A simple kitchen habit is getting fresh attention as many realize their approach to rinsing rice has been off for years. The process may seem basic, yet it plays a big role in how rice turns out on the plate. From texture to cleanliness, a small change in technique can make a noticeable difference.

Rinsing dry rice helps remove excess surface starch that clings to each grain. When that starch stays, cooked rice often becomes sticky, clumpy, or slightly gummy. Washing until the water runs clear leads to lighter, fluffier results. It also helps wash away dust, debris, and any particles picked up during storage or transport.

Still, opinions remain divided. Some people rinse rice every time without question, while others skip the step entirely and stand by that choice. For those who do rinse, the process can feel repetitive and messy. It often takes several rounds of filling and draining water before clarity appears.

The challenge grows when using the wrong tools. A colander can let grains slip away, especially when draining water quickly. Even with a sieve, moving rice between bowls multiple times can feel slow and inconvenient.

A new method shared by TikTok user @awesomemotherhood has sparked conversation online. The video, captioned “genius life hack from mum,” shows a different approach.

A metal bowl is filled with water, then a fine colander is placed inside it. Rice goes into the colander, and a whisk is used to stir the grains briskly. The colander is lifted, the water is discarded, and the process repeats until the water clears.

The clip gained 165,000 likes, though reactions were mixed. One user commented, “My mother taught me not to waste water.” Another added, “So much water wasted is crazy,” while a third wrote, “Stop wasting water!”

Small kitchen habits often shape the final result more than expected. Rice washing is one example where method, tools, and patience all come into play. While no single approach fits everyone, understanding the impact of rinsing can help improve both texture and cleanliness.

Adjusting the process, even slightly, can turn an everyday staple into something far more satisfying.
