Flight Delayed or Cancelled? Here’s How You Can Get Your Money Back

July 7, 2023

For travel enthusiasts, there is nothing more exciting than booking a flight and getting ready for your next adventure. Unfortunately, flights can be delayed or canceled for a number of reasons, leaving you frustrated and wondering what to do next. But did you know that you can actually get your money back if your flight is delayed or canceled?

That is right! you can actually get 4x the value of your ticket in return. Plus, you are entitled to get another ticket for the next flight.

Understand Your Rights as a Passenger

When it comes to flight delays and cancellations, your rights as a passenger are protected under the European Union Regulation 261/2004. This regulation states that you are entitled to compensation if your flight is canceled or delayed by more than 3 hours. And the airline is at fault.

This means that if your flight is delayed because of overbooking or any other reason that is within the airline's control, you are entitled to compensation.

The Amount of Compensation You are Entitled to

How much money you are entitled to? Well, the amount of compensation you are entitled to depends on the length of your flight and the length of your delay. For example, if you have a flight that is less than 1500 km and your flight is delayed by more than 3 hours, you are entitled to $300.

If you have a flight that is between 1500 km and 3500 km and your flight is delayed by more than 3 hours, you are entitled to $600. Likewise, if you have a flight that is over 3500 km and your flight is delayed by more than 3 hours, you are entitled to $800.

Steps to Take to Get Your Money Back

If your flight is delayed or canceled, the first thing you should do is speak to a representative of the airline. They will be able to provide you with information on your rights and what compensation you are entitled to.

Likewise, you should also ask for a meal voucher and a hotel room if necessary. If the airline does not provide compensation voluntarily, you can approach the National Enforcement Body (NEB) in your country and file a complaint. The NEB will then investigate your complaint and provide you with a resolution.

Important Information to Keep in Mind

It is important to keep in mind that there are some situations where the airline is not at fault and, therefore, not liable for compensation. These include situations such as severe weather conditions, political instability, or strikes.

In addition, if you were informed well in advance of your flight that it would be delayed or cancelled, you may not be entitled to compensation. However, if the airline only informed you of the delay or cancellation shortly before your flight, you are entitled to compensation.
